"A Football Match, Scotland v. England" Print

  • This is a 1893, 2nd edition print taken from the original painting by British artists W. H. Overend and L. Smythe. The original and 1st edition print are considered to be the most famous and desirable of all pieces of rugby art – depicting a famous 1885 match, played in Edinburgh, between England and Scotland that ended in a nil-nil tie. Played for the first time in 1879, the match between the two has been played over 100 times and is known as the Calcutta Cup.

This print of the match is unique in that is was printed as an American 1st edition and was targeted for the U.S. market -- the American client requested the Scottish flag be painted over to resemble the U.S. flag of the day – making it a truly one-of-a-kind piece of sporting art.
